Christmas Gifts for Teachers

Here are the Candy Dishes I have made for the girls' teachers (No Martha comments Erika & Karla).

First, I traced the sides and the cutouts onto the back of the patterned papers I chose for the projects, which are from BasicGrey's Fruitcake and Figgy Pudding collections. I used scissors to cut around the outsides, then an exacto knife and glass mat to cut out the cutouts. I also numbered each side and wrote that number on the papers so they would match up.
I primed the areas where the paint would go and painted them with two coats of paint. Word ow warning, the ones with the snowflake cutouts look cute, but they were a pain in the you-know-what to trace, cut out and paint. Once the paint is dry, then decoupage the paper onto the outsides of the dishes. I used the cans of soup as weights so the paper would stay adhered to the sides.

Once the papers were dry, then I coated the outside and inside with a good, thick layer of decoupage. Make sure to have a small brush on hand to get the excess decoupage out of the cut outs.

And here is what they look like with candy in them.

Ice Storm!

This is what we saw out our windows yesterday (Sunday). It started raining about 9:30am, while I was up town getting The Blade and was freezing pretty fast. As a result the kiddos got another day off from school. Sounds like tomorrow it is going to be all rain, but we will see. Seems lately the weatherman can't figure out this crazy weather.

SNOW DAY!

The kiddos got a snow day today. It snowed overnight and left us with 3-4 inches of the fluffy stuff. I love snow this time of the year, it is so pretty for Christmas. Here are a couple of pics taken from the front porch...

Living Room Christmas Tree

Here is a pic of the tree in our living room this year. It has a country, woodsy, log cabin feel. Found some really cool ribbon at Jo-Ann's with moose and pine trees on it and it went from there. used a flash to show the grapevine and berry garland...

December is almost here...

and that means crunch time. Time to get those Christmas cards made and sent, with pics in them, teacher gifts made, house cleaned from top to bottom, finish decorating the dining room (even though I don't feel like it right now) and get sewing on pj's for the girls and doll clothes, YIKES!!!

We had a good Thanksgiving weekend. Did the family thing on Turkey Day and went Black Friday shopping. Lisa went with me this year and it is so much more fun shopping with someone than going alone (which is what I have done for years since everyone thinks I am nuts going Black Friday Shopping). I am pretty much done shopping and gifts are wrapped and under the tree, YAY!!!! Even all the Santa gifts are wrapped and stored out of site (next year I may need to hide them at Mom & Dad's). Below is a picture of some wood ornaments I made for some friends this year. Now I need to get crackin' on teacher gifts. Later............

BUCKEYES RULE!

Another OSU v. U of M game in the record books and another OSU victory, how sweet it is! I know you Michigan fans are just seething right now and wanting Lloyd's head, but come on, what goes around comes around. All the years I had to put up with crap from Michigan fans when you were kicking our proverbial rear ends while John Cooper was at the helm, now you know how much fun it is to be made fun of. I won't rub it in, though, but I can't wait till January when we play in the Rose Bowl. :)

So Much for the Updating...

October was a real pissy month. Seemed that anything that could go wrong did and had some surprises and disappointments too. Lost a former Jo-Ann's co-worker. She died of a stroke at the age of 55. It is different going into the store and not seeing her there anymore.

Anyway, it is amost the middle of November and it is getting busy. Went shopping last weekend with mom, Erika and the girls. I got quite a bit of shopping done and will start wrapping some of it this week. I also put up my living room tree. Why so early you ask? It is a 9 foot pre-lit tree I bought the day after Christmas at Target last year. I wanted to make sure it would work and that sucker is heavy. It comes in 4 pieces and the pole the branches are attached to is steel (not aluminum like a lot of trees), did I mention it is heavy? And tall too. I am changing up my living room theme too. I am going for the country look instead of the burgundy/cream/gold I've had the past seven years. I already have grapevine garland and berry garland around it. Found some really cute country/woodsy ribbon at Jo's and hope to get several more rolls at the Super Jo's in Ft. Wayne. I also plan on cross stitching a bunch of ornaments (time to dig out all those old cross stitch magazines I used to buy) and some out of felt. I also have some fabric from when I worked at Jo's I'll make some ornaments out of too.

Then next year I plan on ripping all the wallpaper out of the dining room and painting where it is now. Then the former living room theme will go to the dining room and the current Victorian theme will move to Abbie's room. I have a tree for Ashton's room and that will be a Precious Moments theme. The kitchen will be a Gingerbread theme (YES, just say it Erika...I AM MARTHA!) and I know that all of my family thinks I am totally anal, but I love decorating for the holidays and then sitting back and looking at all of the decorations.

Pictures will come as I get the rooms done.

Good Grief, It's Been A While......

It's been a busy month with birthdays, Fall harvest, etc. I plan on doing some updating this week, but for now enjoy these pics I took of the sunset tonight. The first one is looking East, the other two to the West.

Future Cheerleader?

Last week the Varsity Cheerleaders hosted a Biddy Cheer camp for girls in second through sixth grade. They had cheer camp after school 3 days and last Friday night (9/21) they all cheered during the 1st quarter of the Varsity football game. Ashton really got into cheering the Rams on, but she was exhausted by the end of the first quarter. She also had a lot of fun, as you can see in the photos below.

9/11 We Will Never Forget......

(c) 2001 The Record, (Bergen County, NJ).
Hard to believe that 6 years ago this day our country sat in stunned silence. Much like my parents will remember where they were when JFK was assinated, many of my generation will remember where they were and what they were doing when the tragedies of 9/11 happened.
Every morning I would get up around 7 and turn on the TV to the Today Show. I'd started to get breakfast around for Ashton, who was almost 2 and myself. Then watch the Today Show till 9 and turn it to PBS so Ashton could watch her shows while I cleaned, did laundry or whatever.
Matt Lauer came on and said that Tower 1 of the WTC complex was on fire and they thought a plane had hit it. So I kept it on the news and watched in horror as the second tower was hit by another plane. At that point I knew it wasn't an accident, we were under attack. I called mom at work, I was stuned and freaked out (I'm sure pregnancy hormones contributed to it). After getting off the phone with her, the Pentagon was hit. I called Matt's sister, hoping she was at home and not flying anywhere (which she does fly alot for her job) and when she didn't answer I called her cell and left a message, praying she was somewhere safe. After a bit Matt's dad called and we talked for a while. I think he was pretty upset about it too. While talking to him, call waiting went off and it was Lisa, thank God! She was in Boise, ID and don't remember if she didn't know what was going on, or how serious it was, but I remember her being surprised at how freaked out I was until I heard her voice. She was stuck in Boise for several extra days and had to drive to SLC to get a flight home.
I had to get out of the house, so that evening I drove up town by myself. I could not believe all the long lines at the gas station and everyone was stocking up on groceries too. That evening was the bluest, most clear sky I had ever seen. I also could not believe the silence for the next several nights with all the planes grounded. I will never forget that day.

First Day of School!

The girls went back to school last Monday (Hoooooray!!!). They were both more than ready to start, especially Abbie starting Kindergarten. Below are a few pics I took on their first day. Notice them holding hands waiting for the bus.....I had to take that one because I know that won't last, LOL! The bottom pic is Abbie with her teacher Mrs. Rowland.

A Year Without "Made in China"

I was reading a message board this morning and saw a thread about this subject. The title of my post is the title of a book by Sara Bongiorni and here is the link to it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Year-Without-Made-China-Adventure/dp/0470116137/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7575417-0607239?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188225682&sr=1-1

The author is going through all the Christmas toys and it dawns on her how much stuff is made in China. So she decides that they will not buy anything "Made in China" for a year. All of this was done and the book published before the pet food, toothpaste and toy recalls that took place this year. I can't wait to get my hands on this book and I think this will be my New Year's Resolution.

Are you in on this with me?

Almost 9 Inches!

I'm talking about rain, Duh! :D

All last week we received almost 9 inches of rain, unbelievable! 4.5 of that came last Monday and different areas around us got dumped on different days. I think most of you read about the severe flooding in Findlay and Ottawa. Matt has a co-worker from Ottawa and he has said it is pretty bad there. Hopefully it will dry off soon, but with all the standing water, I'm sure the non-existent mosquitoes will be arriving soon.

Already 1/3 of August is over...

hard to believe. In 2 1/2 weeks school will start again. Once again the summer has flown by. Below is what we worked onlast weekend. Still have to put the fan and the raised floor in, but the biggest part is done! The first photo is Thursday night (Aug. 2). We put 2 rings on that night.

The next 3 pics were taken Friday Aug. 3. We put 6 rings and the door on in 8 hours, and we sure felt it the next day. Sad to think that we have to invest in some Ben-Gay now that we are older, LOL!

This was taken Saturday morning (Aug. 4). We started around 9am and finished around noon.

Happy Last Day of July! :)

Hope the month of July was great for you. Can't believe that it will be August tomorrow and in 4 weeks school will start again. Looking for a part-time job for now, 2 or 3 days a week while Abbie is in school. I am thinking about applying at Kohl's, that is my new favorite store and it would be nice to have a discount to use there.

Last weekend we went up to the Irish Hills to Hayes State Park. Everyone went, mom & dad, Erika's family, Karla's family and our family. We had a picnic, played in the water and Grandma brought Bubbles along, which the kiddos had fun playing with. We also had a couple of exhausted kiddos that slept well that night.

This weekend is finishing the grain bin and seeing Wendee and her boyfriend at her brothers house. I cannot wait to see Wendee again and I'm sure it will be a great time (always is with Wendee's family). Later.......

No words of wisdom here...........

just some wisdom tooth pain. Yep, I had my wisdom teeth taken out Friday morning. Not doing too bad but I am limited as to what I can eat for a while. I was brave and decided on local anasthetic instead of being knocked out, which I have to say was an interesting experience. Now they are out and I don't have to worry about them any more. And I can't wait till this weekend when I get to see Wendee! I haven't seen her in a long time, so it will be good to catch up again.

A Bin Raising

Instead of a Barn Raising, get it?

Started building another grain bin last weekend. It was perfect weather to work on it and our tans (or should I say Matt & Charlie's sunburns). Matt has the electrical started, now waiting to get the jacks and some help to finish it.

It's Been A While.......

but there hasn't been anything too news worthy to post. Kind of boring, actually, which is nice. Went and picked up my stuff from Jenny Crafts garage sale yesterday and found I got rid of a TON of stuff!!!! She gives you what you sell in store credit, so I am saving that for when she gets new stuff in from what is at the CHA-Summer show in Chicago. Getting ready to start building another grain bin this year. Charlie is coming home to help and I get to make lunch and dinner for 5 guys. I told Matt we are going to grill for dinner, which is one thing I like about Summer. Later, Gators.................

Happy July 4th!

I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July. Nothing too exciting except that Matt harvested his wheat field. We got together with Mom & Dad & Erika's family at Karla's Sunday night. We had planned on taking the girls to see Defiance's fireworks that night, but I got one of those headaches that make you sick to your stomach...not fun. Tonight we watched Napoleon's fireworks about an hour ago. So, no fireworks pics from '07. the ones below were taken in '05 when we went to see Lisa while she still lived in the Cleveland area. Hope you all got to see a fireworks show and Happy Independence Day!

I'm Alive!

and haven't fallen off the face of Earth, at least not yet...........been so stinkin crazy around here. Between softball and t-ball games, school ending a week later because of extra days missed, Bible School and Garage Sale, I'm ready for a VACATION! Ya, I know, we just took one. Well I need another! Below are some more pics from vacation................

Top one is of Canyonlands south of Moab, UT. The next two are at Bryce Canyon...later.

Softball Season in Full Swing

Softball season is now in full swing. It is so much fun watching Ashton play and you can tell that she is thoroughly enjoying it. These pics are from her scrimmage a week ago Saturday. Her first regular season game was rained out, but they played their second game last Friday. She got 3 hits, one of them a double. The bottom pic is Ashton and her best friend Laney. In all honesty, this is so much more fun to watch than T-ball. :)

The Rest of Colorado

These top 5 photos are from Western Colorado. It is amazing the changes you see in mountains from Eastern to Western Colorado. Once you get past Vail you pretty much follow the Colorado River on I-70 until you reach Utah. One of the things we found out, is how much these Western states depend on the Colorado for their water supply and for electricity and sometimes their fights over who gets how many gallons of the water that flows down it. Also there is a lot of activity on the Colorado, saw a lot of people white river rafting, etc. on it. Seriously, if I could, I'd move to Utah in a heartbeat, there is just sooooooooooooo much to do out west. Below is the pic I took when we hit the Utah state line. You could see for miles.......................kind of like South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas. It didn't stay that way for long, we hopped off the interstate for a state route that took us on a scenic route to Moab, UT. There will be more pics of that later.
